LLM

As human society gradually became more civilized, rules were created from time to time to guide people and maintain order in society. Since individuals have different ways of thinking and behaving, it became necessary to establish rules that apply equally to everyone. Over time, these rules developed into laws, and obeying them became mandatory for all citizens. Anyone who violates these laws is punished to maintain discipline, justice, and harmony in society.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the legal system and the Constitution, the LLM (Master of Laws) course was introduced. The LLM is a postgraduate program of one year or two years, designed to help students gain advanced knowledge of law. This course enables students to understand, interpret, and apply legal principles effectively.

It provides in-depth theoretical as well as practical knowledge, helping learners understand the relationship between law and society and preparing them to play a meaningful role in the justice delivery system.

For admission to the LLM program, candidates must have graduated with an LLB degree with at least 50% to 55% marks. Candidates belonging to reserved categories are given relaxation in marks as per government norms.

Admissions to LLM courses are mainly conducted through national and state-level entrance examinations such as AILET (for NLU Delhi), CLAT PG (for National Law Universities), SLAT (for Symbiosis Law Schools), CUET PG (for Delhi University and other central universities), BHU PET (for Banaras Hindu University), IPU CET (for Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University), and LSAT–India (for many private law colleges).

In addition, several states conduct their own entrance examinations, including PU LLM, MH CET Law, TS PGLCET, AP PGLCET, and KLEE (for government law colleges in Kerala). Some universities and institutes also conduct personal interviews along with written examinations as part of the selection process.

The LLM curriculum includes several compulsory papers such as Comparative Public Law, Research Methodology and Legal Writing, Jurisprudence, and Judicial Process, along with specialization papers such as Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Constitutional Law, Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Rights, and International Law.

After completing the LLM course, graduates can pursue various career opportunities. They can work as government advocates or as legal officers in reputed government and private organizations such as RBI, ONGC, Indian Railways, and SEBI, or appear for Higher Judicial Services.

LLM graduates are also employed in the corporate sector as legal advisors, compliance officers, and in-house counsels. Additionally, they can work with NGOs, pursue a PhD in Law, and build a career in academics by working as an Assistant Professor in colleges and universities.
