In the present time, the demand for the education sector is at its peak. Education forms a strong foundation that helps individuals build a meaningful identity in society. Through education, a person not only develops personally but also plays an important role in spreading awareness and contributing to social development. It is a well-known fact that an educated person can adapt to any situation and find ways to live independently, regardless of circumstances.
It is encouraging to observe that people from all sections of society now aspire to educate their children and make them capable and self-reliant. Whether it is extreme cold, heavy rainfall, or intense heat, children can be seen going to school early every morning. Attending school has become an essential part of their daily routine, clearly reflecting the growing importance of education in society.
Due to the continuous and tireless efforts of the government, India’s literacy rate has now reached approximately 80–85 percent. However, even today, a large section of the population remains uneducated, and there is still a strong need for the government to work more effectively in this direction.
When literacy is discussed, it is also important to note that female literacy remains significantly lower than male literacy. Every government aims to achieve 100 percent literacy so that citizens can actively contribute to the development of their families, society, and the nation.
For the effective implementation of school education, the entire teaching system has been divided into different levels. Primary Teachers (PRT) teach students from Classes 1 to 5. Teachers with a B.Ed qualification are considered eligible to teach at the Upper Primary level (Classes 6 to 8) and the Secondary level (Classes 9 and 10).
Teachers who have completed post-graduation along with a B.Ed degree are eligible to teach Classes 11 and 12. According to the new rules, in certain cases, such teachers are also considered eligible to teach Classes 1 to 5 after qualifying CTET Paper I. After completing an M.Ed degree, teachers are considered eligible to teach at the senior secondary level (Classes 11 and 12) as Post Graduate Teachers (PGT).
To ensure quality education, the government focuses on providing good schools and well-trained teachers. From time to time, various policies are introduced to maintain and enhance the quality of teaching. In this context, the Government of India introduced the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The primary objective of NEP 2020 is to ensure that there is no compromise in the quality of education. It emphasizes the availability of competent teachers, quality-based teaching, and a stress-free learning environment where students can pursue their studies smoothly without unnecessary external pressure.
The D.Ed / D.El.Ed is primarily a diploma-level course. Students can take admission to this course immediately after completing their school education. This course is mainly designed for teaching students from Classes 1 to 5.
However, if a candidate completes the D.El.Ed along with graduation, they become eligible to teach up to Class 8.
The basic eligibility for admission to the D.Ed / D.El.Ed course is passing Class 12 from any recognized board in any stream with a minimum of 50 percent marks. Candidates belonging to reserved categories are provided a relaxation of 5 percent in the minimum qualifying marks. The minimum age required to pursue this course is 17 years.
This is a two-year course. As per NCTE rules, it must be completed within a maximum period of three years.
The primary focus of this course is on developing teaching skills rather than only theoretical knowledge. Since young children are involved, the training emphasizes teaching methods that make learning enjoyable rather than burdensome.
Children are encouraged to learn through play-based and activity-oriented approaches. Complex concepts are explained in a simple and easy manner, keeping in mind the psychology of children, so that they develop interest in school and learning.
The D.Ed course places significant emphasis on internship and practical training. During the two-year course, students are required to complete approximately 20 weeks (4–5 months) of internship.
During this period, trainees teach students in government primary schools according to prescribed lesson plans. Internal assessment marks are awarded based on their teaching performance. The D.Ed course is conducted strictly in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
After completing D.Ed / D.El.Ed, a wide range of career opportunities becomes available. After qualifying CTET or STET, candidates can secure government jobs as Primary Teachers (PRT).
There are also numerous opportunities to work as primary teachers in private schools. Additionally, candidates can work as online teachers or start their own coaching institutes.
