B.Ed
In today’s time, the demand for the education sector is at its peak. Education is a powerful wealth that creates a deep and lasting impact on society. Through education, individuals not only shape their own lives but also contribute to awakening and uplifting society. It is a well-known truth that if an educated person is placed anywhere, in any situation, they will find a way to survive and live with dignity. This is one of the greatest strengths of education.
It is encouraging to see that people from every section of society now want to educate their children and make them capable and self-reliant. Whether it is extreme cold, heavy rain, or intense heat, children can be seen going to school early every morning. Going to school has become an essential part of their daily routine, regardless of circumstances. Due to the continuous and tireless efforts of the government, the literacy rate of the country has now reached approximately 80–85 percent. However, a large section of the population is still illiterate, and there is a strong need for the government to work more intensively in this area.
When literacy is discussed, women’s literacy remains significantly lower than that of men. Every government strives to ensure that 100 percent of the population becomes educated so that citizens can actively contribute to the development of their families, society, and the nation. To ensure quality education, the government focuses on providing good schools and well-trained teachers. From time to time, various policies are introduced to maintain and improve the quality of teaching.
In this direction, the Government of India introduced the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes that there should be no compromise in the quality of education. The policy focuses on providing qualified teachers, quality-based learning in schools, and a stress-free environment where students can study comfortably without external pressure. To streamline school education, the teaching structure has been divided into different levels.
PRT (Primary Teacher) teaches from Classes 1 to 5. B.Ed-qualified teachers are considered eligible for upper primary (Classes 6–8) and secondary levels (Classes 9 and 10). If a teacher has completed post-graduation along with a B.Ed degree, they are eligible to teach Classes 11 and 12. Under certain new rules, such teachers may also be considered eligible to teach Classes 1 to 5 after qualifying CTET Paper 1. M.Ed (Master of Education) graduates generally teach Classes 11 and 12 and work as PGT (Post Graduate Teachers).
Under NEP 2020, students can now take admission in a four-year Integrated B.Ed course (ITEP) immediately after completing their school education (Class 12). This program awards both a graduation degree and a B.Ed degree together. Earlier, B.Ed was a two-year course pursued after a three-year graduation, but now both have been integrated, saving one academic year. Additionally, a one-year B.Ed program is being introduced for students who have completed post-graduation or a four-year undergraduate degree.
For students with a three-year graduation degree, the two-year B.Ed will continue for now, but it is likely to be phased out soon, as the government aims to make the four-year integrated course the minimum qualification for school teachers by 2030.
To pursue a two-year B.Ed course, a candidate must have completed graduation or post-graduation from a recognized university with at least 50 percent marks. Reserved category candidates receive a relaxation of 5 percent. For the four-year integrated B.Ed course, candidates must have passed Class 12 from a recognized board with a minimum of 50 percent marks, with similar relaxation for reserved categories.
During the B.Ed program, the main focus is on educational theory and teaching skills. The curriculum includes core compulsory subjects along with two teaching subjects chosen based on the student’s graduation stream—Arts, Science, or Commerce. Practical training is given significant importance, including a four-month school internship where student-teachers gain real classroom teaching experience. In four-year integrated programs such as BA B.Ed, BSc B.Ed, and BCom B.Ed, subjects are selected according to the chosen stream.
The B.Ed course is conducted entirely as per NCTE guidelines. After completing B.Ed, numerous career opportunities open up. After qualifying CTET or STET, candidates can begin their careers as Primary Teachers, TGTs, or PGTs in central or state government schools. Good salary packages are available, and candidates can also work in private schools. Apart from teaching, one can become an educational counsellor, education administrator, start a coaching centre, work as an online teacher, or enter education journalism. By becoming a teacher, one can lead a respectable, stable, and fulfilling life.
