Under the UGC–DEB(ODL) framework, online diploma programs in Library Science are officially recognized and approved. The rising demand for online and ODL programs is reflected in the increasing number of universities offering DEB-approved courses. Between 2021 and 2023, only 33 universities offered such programs, whereas by 2025–26, the number has increased to nearly 80 universities.

To gain admission to an Online Diploma in Library Science program, candidates must have passed the 12th standard with at least 50% marks in any subject. Students from reserved categories may be admitted with lower marks as per applicable norms. No entrance examination is required, and admission is based on eligibility criteria and academic performance.

After completing an Online Diploma in Library Science, students become eligible for various job roles such as Library Assistant, Library Attendant, Cataloguer, and Information and Library Assistant, among others. The value and recognition of an Online Diploma in Library Science are equivalent to those of a regular diploma in Library Science.
